
Mike Olszewski is a veteran radio / TV / print journalist whose career started at all-news WERE back in 1977, moving on to the legendary WMMS in 1988, and television at WOIO / WUAB in 1994. He is currently pursuing graduate studies at Kent State University.He’s won over 30 first place news awards from United Press International, the Associated Press, the Greater Cleveland Radio and Television Council, the Press Club of Cleveland, Women in Communications, and the AIR Awards. Mike also won the National Associated Press Award in 1989 for "Best Radio Enterprise Story of the Year", as well as a Silver Medal in the International Radio Festival of New York. Along with local radio, Mike was writer, producer and host of "The Source Report", a public affairs show for young adults on the Westwood One Radio Network from 1990 to 92, and in July 1993, hosted the internationally broadcast "Radio Free Aerosmith" special live from backstage at the Richfield Coliseum. He’s also hosted his own half-hour program, "Backstage Pass: The Special" on WOIO-TV, and coordinated and hosted the station’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opening coverage along with inductee Mary Wilson of the Supremes.Mike has written about popular culture for years , with articles featured in Cleveland Magazine, Filmfax, Outre, Bone, and Masters of Rock. He’s also co-written or was part of the editorial team for a number of books about local television, including Barnaby & Me by Linn Sheldon, American Rock and Roll Tour , and Radio Daze: Stories from the Front in Cleveland’s FM Air Wars.Mike was also the first to confirm Cleveland as the site of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a live interview with Arista Records founder Clive Davis on ABC Talkradio.He’s also done local research for the A & E Network’s "Biography" (about radio personality Don Imus), National Public Radio’s "Lost and Found Sound" (concerning disc jockey "Walkin’ Talkin’" Bill Hawkins), and the BBC-TV production "Dancin’ in the Streets" (tracing the career of David Bowie). Mike also provided production information, graphics and sound for Cameron Crowe’s film "Almost Famous".Over the years, he’s scored exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names in the entertainment field, including Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend, and many others. Mike has also covered the Rock Hall inductions in New York, Los Angeles and Cleveland, broadcasting via satellite the next morning from the Source Radio Network studios. He’s also been a guest on CBS-TV and the Financial News Network discussing the Hall, covered White House conferences, and the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. In addition, Mike is an inductee in both the Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and the Radio / Television Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Along with his duties at Kent State, he is also co-producing television / DVD documentaries. His co-production of the Donnie Iris documentary "Ah! Leah!" aired on WQED-TV in 2004, and won a national Telly award in 2005. In addition, he won a 2006 Telly for his work on the DVD documentary "Beatles Reclaimed", and is currently finishing work on the TV documentary for Radio Daze, which will air later this year.Mike is a native Clevelander, graduated from Bedford High School, and Cleveland State University. He’s been married to his wife, Janice, since 1978. He is also pursuing a wide range of civic and volunteer efforts, and is actively researching and archiving the history of Northeast Ohio’s broadcast media.
